Herren I at Ratingen1st Mens defends 1st Place On Saturday July 28th, the first men’s team played in Ratingen against the Goose Necks. The top two teams in the northern division of the 2nd Bundesliga had an exciting first game. The Regents used timely hitting and took advantage of Goose Neck errors in the 2nd inning to jump on top 5-0 after two innings. Kevin Froese pitched three scoreless innings to begin the game for the Regents. The Goose Necks slowly climbed back into the game, and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a 7-6 lead into the 9th inning. Judd Thomas and David Wohlgemuth responded by driving in one run each, to give the Regents a 8-7 lead going into the home half of the 9th inning, where the Regents couldn’t manage to shut out the Goose Necks, who scored twice in the last frame to win the game.
The second game, however, was controlled by the Regents from start to finish. Behind strong pitching from David Wohlgemuth, only allowing two runs over five innings pitched, and solid fielding, the Regents kept their grasp on first place in the 2nd Bundesliga. Diego Ceron, 3-4 with 3 RBI, and Michael Ullrich, 3-4 with 3 runs scored, were the hitting stars for the Regents, as well as Steffen Endrigkeit adding 2 RBI of his own. The Regents batted around the line-up in the 4th inning, where they scored five runs on four hits and two walks. Using stolen bases and well-timed hit-and-runs, the Regents advanced runners as often as they could throughout the game. The Regents went on to win 10-2, with Yoni Werchow closing out the game with a 1-2-3 7th inning.
